Civil Claims against the Government

We represent clients in actions against the NZ Police, Department of Corrections, Ministry of Justice and Child Youth & Family. Often this is after a police prosecution has been dismissed or withdrawn by a Judge.  We act for clients all over New Zealand and overseas.

We currently have two on-going class actions. We have a good success rate for clients and have one of the larger practices in the country in this area of law.  

We were counsel in the Vaihu case which considered s9 of the BORA 1990 in relation to Police dog bites. We have had success in cases such as unlawful detention, excessive force and pepper spray cases. Most cases settle out of court but can take 6-15 months for a successful outcome. We are leading lawyers in this field and have a number of "test" cases before various courts.

We welcome clients who need legal aid in this area. The awards  given to clients are generally modest but most people see their claim as a matter of principle more than anything else.
